    Why I Hate Windows 7

My new Windows 7 Ultimate update from Windows XP has made all my directories read only. This includes 2 external hard drives. The files in the folders are NOT read only. I have tried the following fixes but to no avail:

    1. a simple updating of the check box in the folder
    2. going to the properties for the folder, going into Security and I find that I have all the permissions there and I am signed in as the Administrator
    3. I changed my name as administrator several times anyway and this did no good.
    4. I inserted the Windows 7 disk, booted and did a repair

I can not think of anything else to do.

To top off everything the copy of Windows 7 that I bought from Newegg is giving me a product number that Microsoft service won't accept even though it worked to install the system.

If anyone has solved this problem please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Ken

Post what the security tab in the folders properties says.

    1) If the (Read Only" checkbox has a check mark in it, it means Read Only. If it is Clear, then it means NOT Read Only. If it is filled-in, it means that some files are Read Only and some are not. In the case of folders, it means that the folder may contain files with either state.

    2) As you have rightly discovered, this has nohing to do with security permissions (unless you have the "Lock Icon Overlay" on a folder icon)

    3) Chaing your username won't do this

    4) Neither will a repair install

And for your final point, it's likely then that you received a generic OEM copy of the Windows 7 DVD. Microsoft does not provide end-user support for OEM copies of Windows, which should be provided by the manufacturer. According to the EULA, NewEgg (or anyone else for that matter) is not allowed to sell OEM Disks on their own unless accompanied with a full computer (or a combo of other hardware). Microsoft only provide end-user support to boxed retail copies of Windows.

When you click on Properties for a folder in Windows Explorer you will see a filled (checked) read-only box. This box DOES NOT mean the folder is read-only nor does it have ANY effect on the files within the folder.

The folder properties read-only marker is used internally by Windows for other purposes. You CANNOT change it! Windows has been this way for many years.

The exception is that if you change that read-only property AND checkmark "apply to all folders and files" that change will be applied to the files inside that folder. Nevertheless that change will NOT be applied to that folder itself or any of its sub-folders themselves. The files will have any change applied and the folders WILL REMAIN marked as read-only.

The same thing happened to me once on a Vista install. I had to do a fresh installation in the end. If I remember rightly it had something to do with a compressed disk.

The only way to upgrade to 7 from XP is to do a clean install. Ken said he did an "update", not an "upgrade" and a clean install saves no settings. I remember being confused about read-only in the context zBobG mentioned, sounds like this may be the issue?

    edit
good grief, just noticed this was posted last Oct., so I guess Ken isn't hating any more, or if he is then he's so infuriated that he blew up his computer or something.
