Moving Windows 7 HDD to differnet PC that is the same make/model

    Hi,

I did some reasearch before posting this but wanted to get a few more opinions. My organization is going to upgrade from XP to Windows 7 - 32 in the comming weeks. We are an all Dell shop and have 7 different Dell models. We have our image ready for deployment but here is how we are going to deploy.

-We are going to get (5) PCs of each model.
-Image those PCs and join them to the network.
-Finialize and special software or settings.
-Remove the hard drive once imaging is complete, activate windows then place that hard drive in a PC that is the exact same model (i.e. the hard drive from a 745 will go in a 745, a 755 in to a 755, etc).

We do this all the time with Windows XP. Has anyone ran in to any problems performing these same steps with Windows 7? Is there a document or something on with more information on this? We just do want there to be a problem once we start deploying.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions,
    Keith

    Hi Keith,

    Welcome to Seven forums.

I don't it should be much of a problem if you are using enterprise version of windows. If it is a retail version then you might have to activate them differently.

It is advised that you the disk supplied by us(OEM) only. Once you have installed windows, drivers and software then you can take a backup:

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

However, system image model you create make sure that you use the image on same model of system. As drivers for every system would be different.

If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us.

If the moved HD will not start as it should on new hardware, your options are to SysPrep to move HD to another computer or use Paragon Adaptive Restore - Overview.
