Unacceptable performance from Win 7 Pro 64bit OS

Due to various problems over the past 2 weeks I have decided that it is time to backup, reformat and reinstall Windows onto my hard drive and in doing so get rid of any bugs that may be present.
My concern here is that I have never undertaken this activity in the past so would be grateful for any assistance that would ensure success.

One concern I have is that my C drive is 1.5TB and the contents is presently listed as 178 GB.
My 2nd hard drive is only 80 GB and I am concerned that this is not large enough to provide sufficient room for backup.

What I need to know is exactly what files need to be backed up which should include my Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail files as well.
Obviously the above would not include all program software which I would reinstall after the OS.

I look forward to receiving your replies
