    profile not shown in registry

    Hi
I am trying to help out a friend who has a problem when loading his profile. When he clicks his Icon (grandad) it won't log in although up until Friday this was fine. The other 2 profiles on his laptop work fine but he needs all the relevant folder and emails etc.

I have looked in the profilelist in the registry and user "Grandad" isn't there so I cannot alter etc. Now comes an even stranger part, the registry does list a user "Ken" (his name) but this doesn't show on the log in screen?

As he uses his laptop daily he really needs to access his old profile, can anyone help with this before he jumps off the nearest tall building.

    Hello Moults,

Since the exact error message is not known, you might see if doing a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this issue started may be able to undo and fix it.

Hope this helps for now, :)

    Hi Shawn
The exact error message is "The User Profile Service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded"
    Thanks for your help

Hello Macmuc, and welcome to Seven Forums.

In that case, check to see if the tutorial below may be able to help with that error. Be sure to read all of it for all available options.

User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Unfortunately we have followed the tutorial but as we have no restore dates it hasn't helped. The profile just doesn't exist in the registry but does when you start the computer but with no access?

I must admit this has me baffled.

That is odd that the profile is not in the registry, but still on the log on screen.

Does it show the account in Control Panel -> User Accounts?

If so, does it's "C:\Users\(user-name)" profile folder still exists.

If so, then while logged in to the built-in Administrator account, you might consider to create a new administrator account to use instead, copy any files (ex: documents, music, etc...) from the old account to the new one, delete the old account from User Accounts, then see if that clears this up.
