    Since you are seeing a "Other User" option on the log on screen, you might see if this is the issue in the tutorial below to sort it.
    If you are unable to do what's in the tutorial, then see if you may be able to do so from the built-in Administrator account. If you area unable to enable it normally, then you could try to do so at boot.

    I assume a reset disk from my other computer won't work, eyh?

    Well, I'm about done. Luckily this is my spare so if I have to rebuild it's not the end of the world. Don't know how the "Guest" user got triggered. Thanks for the help.

    but, as for now, the "guest" account seems to be doing everything I need.
