Broke booting driver order; Mouse & Keyboard fail to function.

Hello all,

AVAST rendered my windows useless by causing it to immediately restart after booting (so I see the 4 color orbs of the windows loading up, then see the blue background where you choose which account to log into then it restarts).

So, after messing around with it for a while I managed to fix the booting process via safemode by messing around with msconfig. It looks like something went right because now the PC boots into the windows login perfectly fine, however, I lost all functionality with my keyboard and mouse. Hence, not allowing me to do anything but stare at the screen or a forced power restart/shutdown. The KB and mouse work perfectly fine during the BIOS phase prior to booting to windows. I bought a PS/2 keyboard today thinking that it might solve the issue (my original KB and mouse are USB) but it did not. I spent a night and morning googling methods but I can't seem to find anything related to my issue and my migraine finally kicked it from frustration.

What can I do to fix this without reinstalling windows? Is there a method to reset what drivers load up? Or maybe reset msconfig startup parameters to default? Another issue I'm having is that I do not have the "repair install" option when I boot with the Windows DVD. This had me stumped all last night but I finally realized that it's because you need to activate the DVD from within the Windows Environment then reboot. That, as I stated, is not possible.

EDIT: Also, none of the other recovery options helped me during the BIOS phase. (The ones that pop up after clicking F8)

So you booted in safe mode and changed some things in msconfig. "normal boot" works as well as I read correctly. Did you use keyboard/mouse to logon? Do you see clock in bottom right of screen? Does it increase a minute each minute?

What did you "mess around" with msconfig?

So, I booted into safemode and changed the "startup" and the "services" parameters. For "startup", I disabled all of them. (Keep in mind at this point I was desperate and pretty rung out ), for "services" I removed every service not from "microsoft" and maybe one "microsoft" service, I do not recall which.

I can reach the sky blue windows login screen and see my 2 different accounts in both safemode and normal mode. The mouse icon is in the center, the shutdown icon is in the lower right corner. There are no clocks. My keyboard num light indicator is also frozen at this point (despite it working fine in BIOS) when I press the num lock, not sure if this information will help.

Did you disable "all startup items" and all "non microsoft services"?

Press F8 on boot. Select option "repair your computer". Try a system restore to a date prior to having problems. Can you boot to safe mode afterwards? And normal boot?

Maybe it is just a freeze.

Remember, I tried all of the F8 options to no avail. Repair your computer just states that it could not find anything that needs repair. I also have no restore points.

Yes, exactly. And maybe one microsoft service which I do not recall what it is.

I was having BSOD issues a while back which I could not get rid of. I spent over a month figuring it out and somehow, from my various analyses, I decided that it was AVAST. Probably from the eventviewer. Anyhow, the PC worked fine for a long time (over a month wit no BSODs or random restarts) until last night, Kaspesky finished its free trail, so I deleted that. I DLed AVAST.Then I went through the installation questions and hit INSTALL. A minute after I get the same issues (blue corrupted screen with an abrupt reboot) I had a while back when AVAST was my antivirus.

I don't know how this information will help you or me, however Keep in mind my main questions are "What can I do to fix this without reinstalling windows? Is there a method to reset what drivers load up? Or maybe reset msconfig startup parameters to default?"

• Disablïng "startup items" doesn't freeze win7. Nor does it crash win7.
• Disabling ALL services .... win7 still boots. (just tested it).

None of the F8 recovery items make you boot succesfully. Only "repair your computer" works. No "restore points" on system.

I gonna investigate how to force "normal boot"
