Sounds like a virus to me.

Download and run Malwarebytes in safe mode.
Malwarebytes : Thank you for download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

If it comes back positive for viruses please tell me what they are.

It sounds like a virus i personally have had were it hid all my desktop icons. But this sounds a little different.

    Hope this helps

Did you run malwarebytes in safe mode? Did you update it with the latest definitions?

Did malwarebytes not find anything? Did it fail to run?

Since this happened after you looked at an e-mail i am almost sure it is related to a virus.

I have had viruses were after i removed the virus i had to undo the damage they did. If i know what virus it is i can look it up and try to resolve the problem.

If the virus scanner option doesn't work we would be looking at a system restore to a previous date.

How about explaining what you did to fix it.

    Inquiring minds, y'know.
