Valid license key with no access to media

My company just purchased a new Compaq tower yesterday that came with Windows 7 Home Premium, but the network is still XP pro and so IT used their volume license to format/reinstall the system.

I spoke with my boss and he approved me to take the 7 Home Premium license key for my home Compaq laptop because by the time they upgrade to 7 they would use volume licensing for pro anyway, but then when I spoke with IT he said that the system didn't come with any media.

Is there any way to get Windows 7 Home Premium Media, or to use the system recovery partition from the desktop to create media that I could then use to perform a fresh install of Windows 7 on my home computer? And is it even legal to do so?

Well I don't know where you can freely download the Windows 7 media legitimately.

I suppose it's possible that this wouldn't work anyway, if the license key on the Compaq was OEM.

The oem keys are not tied to a unique computer, only one that has the correct line of code in a certain section of the bios. You should be able to request media from compaq. If not, you can request replacement media from microsoft for a nominal fee.

The product key is posted on the side of the tower, so I guess I'll call Compaq and see if they can send me the media. Both machines are Compaq so I was hoping that even if it's OEM that the install would be valid.
I guess I was just thinking, . o O ("gee how awesome would it be to get 7 for free.")

If you end up getting the OEM media from Compaq, you should have no problems installing it on your Compaq. The BIOS check should bypass the "enter your key" section of the install.

There is a recent article on the "My Digital Life" website with links that might be of interest to the OP.

I actually got four valid, legal license for Windows 7 from the MSDN Academic Alliance e-academy software Works really fine.

Really nice to have the RTM version of Windows 7. Even the swedish version months before it is on the market. Hehe :)
