Won't let me rename or copy files

I decided to try some themes and the one I installed I didn't really like it so I decided to go an uninstall it. I restored my backup explorer.exe but then delete the one from the theme but it wouldn't let me. It didn't give me any errors. It showed the screen with the progress bar of it being deleted but after that it was still there.

I decided to try shell32.dll. I wasn't able to delete the themed shell32.dll because it was in use but I was able to rename it. After renaming it I went to rename my backed up shell32.dll to its original name but it wouldn't let me. I decided to rename the themed shell32.dll back to its original name so I have a shell32.dll but it wouldn't let me do that either.

Now I don't have a shell32.dll. Well I do but not in the correct name. Can anyone help me with renaming this file?

    Hello Daniel,

You ran into the "in use" issue.

If you like, you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before you used the themes to undo it.

You should also be able to run a sfc /scannow command to repair your system files since SFC will replace these modified files with the default ones.

    Hope this helps, :)

Before I got your reply my computer crashed and now it won't up because the file is missing. Anyway to rename files now or to fix this issue?

If you like, you could see if you are able to do a system restore at boot, or run SFC at boot. Details for both are in the same tutorial links above.

I actually managed to figure out a way to fix before you replied. What I did was have it run command prompt at start and simply typed in a command to rename the "shell32.dll.backup" to "shell32.dll".

It worked and I no longer got the error. I can also now rename files again.

I never heard of sfc / scannow before but I'll take at it and I'll try using it if this issue happens again and my method doesn't work. Thanks for telling me about that.
