Getting exhausted trying to put my laptop to Sleep
Sleep mode worked fine for 2+ years, until a month or so ago. I could get to Sleep mode from Start/Shut Down, or automatically by closing the lid. Now I can't get to it either way. Panasonic CF-W8 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate. Sleep mode is essential when running on battery, and even preferable when plugged in and leaving the laptop for a few hours.
I know there are lots of threads about Sleep mode. I have tried all the standard and recommended approaches and more, and spent many hours on this. My power settings are correct for going into Sleep mode and unchanged. I have also tried changing them and then changing them back.
I have tried using Msconfig and eliminating every process and service that didn't look essential. I stopped the various speedup services like for Acrobat, MS Office, etc. I turned off Windows Indexing. Once in a while, for no repeatable reasons, I was able to get into sleep via Start/Shut Down, but never by shutting the lid. I tried starting up in Diagnostic mode but some video driver didn't load so I couldn't test that way. I tried starting in Safe mode but the power utility doesn't load, so there is no Sleep mode. Powercfg -Energy doesn't show anything new running that appears likely to prevent Sleep.
Also, it says S1, S3, and S4 sleep states are supported. I do not want to reformat and reinstall Windows 7 plus all my other programs from scratch. My last full system backup was after Sleep stopped working, so a restore from there wouldn't help. I am open to suggestions.
