    Cannot move files and folder - need help

    I burned a DVD with family genealogy folders and files from my old XP pc and want to move them to my new Win 7 Pro pc. When I attempt to move them I get a popup telling me I need permission to perform this action.

    I have never encountered this issue before and wonder why this happens and how to circumvent it to move these folder and files.

    Any assistance would be appreciated,

    Mary

    Windows does have a self defense feature that can be very annoying,
    Right click one or the main folder and click on Properties,
    On the General section on the very bottom see if there's a Unblock button active/ if so click on it and click on Apply and okay,
    You can use this on Personal folders,

    Cannot move files and folder - need help

    Thanks to responders - I may have mistakenly led you to believe that the problem resided with Win 7 - I am getting the error message when I attempt to copy/move one of folders in my family genelalogy files - oddly it is occurring with just one of the folders that I want to copy all the others present no problem?

    Perhaps I should submit my query to a Win XP forum.

    The answers provided should apply to the situation you describe. It would be helpful if you provided a screenshot of the error message, see link below for instructions;

    @FDM

    You should really upgrade your OS. Support for windows xp ends soon.

    I tried the web links suggested and found they unfortunately did not resolve the issue. Again I should revisit the original query. I have collected a great deal of family history information on the hard drive of my Win XP pc. One of the folders created contains one branch of the family. Now that I have a new Win 7 Pro pc I am transfering many folders and files from the XP pc to the Win 7 pc. Most transfers have been successful, but one of the folders in my genealogy group will not move or copy to a CD or thumb drive.

    Attached is the error message that pops up when I try to move or copy to an external storage device.

    What has me perplexed is that I can move or copy the folder and its contents to other locations on the XP pc but not to an external storage device from which I can make a transfer to the new Win 7 pc?

    It may be useful to know which process issues this error message. See whether you can find out with this:

    Andrew thanks for the response - I have tried Easy Transfer and again the Folder failed to copy and transfer.
    I guess something has caused the folder to not allow it to be moved or copied to an external device.
