Windows 7: Very Very weird HDD vibrations in Define R4

06 Sep 2015   #21

I never really figured out why this fading thing happened (mine was a seagate drive btw).
I actually just pulled the drive out and put in a WD green 2tb drive we had laying around.
I know this might not really be what you want to hear and its not a solution either but harddrives can't live forever, my drive was about the same age too, 5-6 years.
I never had any problems with my drive and the S.M.A.R.T readings where nothing out of the ordinary, so i guess you could just keep using the drive as long as you can.
However please do NOT store anything important or irreplaceable on the drive because it might just be on its last years!
The weird fading sound is probably created from the bearing going bad, this theory can be backed up by holding the drive to your ear and slowly turning it, from mine i hear a whining/whistling noise wich i presume come from the bearing/motor.
Just dont drop the drive if youre going to do this..
I guess you should just leave it be and take my word for it that the drive is old, mechanical parts degrade and brake and that it might just die on you without any warning. So back up your important data and save up for a new ssd and/or a new harddrive (wich are really cheap now)
I learned my lesson from not trusting people when it came to ssd's btw... Now i have finally bought the 850 Evo 250GB and im happier than ever before, because its just that snappy!

Windows 7

Weird thing is mine had this issue from day one when i just bought it new, and i have been using it like this for 5-6 years. I'm not really interested in a solution or fix for this since i have extra hard drives just laying around so if it ever were to go bad i can replace it easily. i was more interested into knowing what exactly causes this to happen, since i just find it weird how those vibrations fade in and out and are not constant, it's more out of technical interest really. Like you mentioned it presumably has something to do with the bearing. If the drive ever goes bad or i decide to replace it i might actually one day open the drive up and examine it.

Ah ok, yeah i guess it could be that the bearing has been "faulty" set up from the beginning then, but it seems to have ran fine so eh, i don't know, i don't really think that this fading thing is something dangerous either, i just don't trust harddrives that doesen't behave like normal..
I would like to open up mine but i have it untouched just in case if some other computer here needs a new harddrive fast for some reason.. If you ever decide to open the drive up for some reason then i'd love to know if you find anything

Windows 7 64-bit

I was given a tower with space for 4 hard drive's. After having a loud vibration from the tower, I eventually found the cause.
The drive bay's we're badly welded in place, And we're wider at the top than the bottom.
Only one bay would seat a drive properly, One was too small, And the other 2 we're too wide, And any drive in these 2 caused a lot of vibration, With a humming sound getting louder then quieter, louder and...

Netbook or do you define the difference?
Since it is said there's no such thing as a stupid question, here's a question.....where do you draw the line between laptop and netbook? Is it screen size, is it whether or not it has a CD/DVD drive? I had always associated the term with the 10.1" screen portables, until I bought one with a...
