In re-reading, I see that I neglected to address the main point of your post. 'Name select' was more useful to me because it made it easy to bring focus to that pane for mouse-wheel scrolling, and as jemcgarvey mentions, it made selection, de-selection and re-selection of single or multiple files simpler. I've come to the conclusion that I can live with FRS, using the neutral space to the left of the file to click on and gain focus. :)

Thanks James. I did some experimenting and also found the small area to the left of the file name that could be clicked to deselect. You can also hold down the Ctrl key and click on a selection to deselect it.

Unless one uses (as I do) the 'Single click to open an item (point to select)' option in the General tab of Folder Options. The focus must be on the pane to select in that mode. But the area left of the file solves that as well.

You can try this one, it's an add-on for explorer. Works for me, and I didn't have to mess with registry Folder Options X
