PC crashed, now Win 7 ultimate 64 is really slow, not working right

    OS-Windows 7 ultimate SP1 64-bit, I have a separate boot drive – C (500GB) and data drive – D (1.5 TB). 5 year old PC-Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9450 @ 2.66 GHz, 4GB memory. I re-installed Win 7 in June 2012 when my original boot disk died.

Something seems messed up with Windows, not sure how to recover from that. I looked through the tutorials. History to date…

Jan 23-After downloading a file to my PC on my D data drive, I was unable to rename the file or delete it. File may have been on a bad sector. Explorer hung… My OS crashed/did a memory dump.

I booted my PC (no hardware errors seen), it shows Starting Windows…
Monitor went blank from lack of input from PC at 10 min (using a KVM switch with shared monitor, KB, mouse).
I power cycled my PC. It shows Starting Windows… I heard the web cam move like normal, didn’t go any further.

Later, hold F8 during boot, loading drivers, last one displayed was aswRvrt.sys please wait…
    PC rebooted, I didn’t hit F8 fast enough… it shows Starting Windows…

Power cycle PC, hold F8, selected “repair your computer”, it didn’t look like it was fixing anything…
It finally came up with system recovery options, turned off PC to connect it to separate monitor, KB, mouse.

Put in Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit install DVD, hold F8 Launch repair recommended, I select that
    8pm-Finally startup repair window appeared:
901pm-Do you want to restore your computer using system restore? Yes
    Attempting repairs…
    929pm-the restore screen went away…
    932-PC rebooted

Shows starting windows splash screen, like it did before after got BSOD…
943pm-Finally got the login screen, able to login. It’s taking a really long time to get in.
    947-Finally got my desktop screen.

1003pm-Running computer mgmt, disk management, taking a really long time to get in
    Connecting to virtual service…
Loading disk configuration information…I terminated the app using the x.

    In an admin cmd window
    Chkdsk D: /F
Windows checked the file system and found no problems. I ran it a second time.

I still can’t delete the file that caused the crash.

I managed to backup my data drive using GoodSync Pro to an USB external drive. Took 2.5 hrs, no errors. Explorer stopped responding.

Jan 24-I ran system restore, took a few minutes to start then show a window. It said no restore points have been created. To create a restore point open system protection.
Click on system protection to run it. It’s searching for available drives…, very slow, takes minutes.
159pm-It finally showed the available drives:
    Local disk C (system) on
    Data-BU (D) off
    Elements (E) off

Create a restore point right now for the drives that have system protection turned on (select C drive).
    205pm-Click create.
    209-system protection shows creating a restore point…

CPU & memory usage is low yet it’s taking a very long time for the task to finish.

219pm-The restore point could not be created for the following reason:
The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try this operation again. (0x81000101)
    Please try again.

I tried to turn off system protection, really slow, cancelled it.

In an admin Cmd window, type
    chkdsk C: /F

Volume is open, check it during next restart? Y
    640pm-restart OS (shutting down)
643pm-it’s rebooting, ran the chkdsk, no errors found

    647pm-Rebooting

    647-Starting windows…
    Black screen…
    659-got a mouse, login screen.
    7pm-Got my desktop
It’s sluggish, taking a long to show processes from all users.

    709pm
Run Computer Mgmt, Disk Mgmt, taking a long time to show disks, just like earlier
    726pm-cancel Disk Mgmt, System Restore
    Restart, shutting down

727pm-boot from Win 7 ultimate DVD
731pm-safe mode with cmd prompt, next, repair your computer, system recovery options, Searching for Windows installations… it’s really slow, command prompt

    X:\Sources> sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows
It didn’t do it, showed me the options as if I used the wrong syntax, weird.
It’s not running SFC, not sure why. Not sure if I need to run the 32 or 64-bit version or if it matters.

This is where it’s at, something seems messed up with Windows, not sure how to recover from that. I’d appreciate some help to get Win 7 working right again.

I would definitely scan for spyware using the program superantispyware at this link below:

    SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloading File

also; scan for adware using the following link:

    Downloading AdwCleaner

and finally scan for malware using the below link:

    http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

Sounds like you have been infected with possible spyware, malware and or adware

Creating a Restore Point after you have a problem, will do you no good. Leave the System Protection turned on so that next time there is a problem, you will have a Restore Point. == You have checked most of the normal things. You probably don't want to hear this, but I would start thinking about a Clean Install Windows 7

Thanks for the suggestions. I installed the 3 cleaners, that didn’t make any difference. It took some time to figure out which registry keys were safe to delete after running AdwCleaner!

Monday, I booted from the SeaTools for DOS CD. The data drive failed the drive self-test short test, so the drive is failing. I disconnected the 2 old data drives, then with only the boot drive, Windows started up quickly. All the problems Win 7 was experiencing were related to the failing drive. I bought a Western Digital black SATA3 3 TB drive that night, started to restore the data the next day and it was finished this morning.

That file I had downloaded was on the backup and had to be deleted from an admin cmd window using “del /P /F xx.mp4”. I had to delete the Win 7 icon.db file to get some app icons back on my desktop. Everything is working fine now. Thanks again.
