Help Managing icons in the system tray (navigation area)

At one time I had just a few icons in the navigation area, others were in the window above the task bar; but now I have a row of them and am unable to utilize the commonly accepted method for moving them into the little window..."The quickest way to tidy your system tray is with drag and drop. Click a system tray icon, hold down the left mouse button, and drag it to the arrow next to the system tray. Drop it into the little window that appears and it will be hidden from your taskbar".

I do not find the arrow next to the system tray, nor can I produce the window that once contained several icons.

I would appreciate a way to accomplish it.

    Hello Mary,

The tutorial below can help show you how to hide or show notification area icons.
In addition, you could use the tutorial below to reset the notification area to remove any old icons.
    Hope this helps, :)

If you have a bunch of icons in the bottom right System tray it means they are starting up with Windows, and most are not needed to do that and only do so in order to spy on you and freeload on your resources.

I won't allow anything to start with Windows on my installs except the AV, gadgets and my sync.

To get rid of the freeloaders establish a Clean Boot as shown in the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Shawn, thanks for the response. I viewed the tutorial you provided but as much as I would like to utilize Option 1 I do not have the arrow in the notification area and cannot bring up the little window where I can move some icons.

Guess I will live with the current configuration.

    Mary,

You should be able to also use step 3 or 4 in OPTION ONE to be able to customize (hide/show) them. Step 2 for the arrow was just 1 of 3 ways to.

    right click the start button>properties>taskbar>customize

then uncheck always show all icons

then, under behaviors, choose what you want each icon to do.
