Windows Explorer has stopped working after right click.

I bought a new hard drive for my laptop and decided to do a clean install of a valid copy of Windows 7 Ultimate w/SP1.

Spent many hours doing all of my Windows updates. Installed Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy and AVG Pro Trial from the official sites. Updated all my drivers and installed Chrome, Firefox, Java, MS Office Student/Home, Adobe Reader and a few other utilities.

After a couple days I opened up Windows Explorer to delete a few files and every time I right clicked on a folder I received a notification the "Windows Explorer has Stopped Working". Windows Explorer would shut down and restart.

I searched these forums and others for a solution and spent hours trying to solve my issue to no avail.

Thinking something was corrupt, I finally decided to reinstall Win 7 Ultimate SP1 again yesterday. Did all my Windows updates , installed Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy and decided to try Avast Free instead of AVG. Went to delete my "Windows Old" folder so that Spybot could do a speedier "White List Scan" and.... the darn Windows Explorer stopped working again every time I right clicked on the folder or any other folder for that matter!!!

How could this be? All that was installed was MS updates, Malwarebytes, Spybot and Avast.

So... I did a system restore to just after I installed all the Windows updates but before I installed Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy and Avast. Lo and behold I'm no longer getting the "Windows Explorer has Stopped Working" notification.

I have never had issues with Windows Explorer, Malwarebytes , Spybot Search and Destroy or AVG before but I firmly believe this time it is either Malawarebytes or Spybot Search and Destry causing the issue with Windows Explorer stopping. I doubt its AVG or Avast because it is doubtful they could both be causing this issue on two separate installs.

It is too late for me to reinstall Malwarebytes test and then Spybot and test. Will do that tomorrow and report.

Any feedback is welcome and appreciated on this thread.

If you're using Spybot 2 disable Spybot 2's explorer integration and see how you go.

    Try this,

Disabling CEIP Customer Experience Improvement Program
    1. Click start and type gpedit.msc on search bar or on RUN command
    2. Now navigate to
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Internet Communication Management, and then click Internet Communication settings
    3. Locate Turn off Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program , double click or right click edit.
    4. Click on Enable . Apply and Ok and close gpedit window.

Same problem I had for months until I found this website. I uninstalled SpyBot 2.0 and my problems were resolved. I'm no longer getting windows has stopped working error. Get rid of SpyBot 2.0 and the problems are gone. Thanks
