Random files in C://, where are they coming from?

What is all this crap in the attached image... It's in my C:// folder, and I'm pretty sure more of it is getting put there... not sure what program or how it's getting there, but what can I do?

Those are temporary files, typically created by Windows Update or some other program installation.

Try cleaning that out using this:

Disk Cleanup - Open and Use
Disk Cleanup : Extended

Reboot, and see if they are still present.

whats in the folders - that might give you and others a clue

the dates don't gel with WU Patch Tuesday dates - unless you run WU in dribs and drabs

could be a program that has a redirect for its temp files - usually via an environment variable, might have been clobbered so its defaulting to C:\

Launch a Command prompt and type (or copy and paste)
set > %USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Environs.txt
exit

Attach Environs.txt from your Downloads folder to your next post. Use the paperclip icon on the post menu to attach the file)I'm looking for two environment variables TEMP & TMP - both should be set to \AppData\Local\Temp

Looking into my crystal ball, I see...
...a .NET update repeatedly failing
...or some app attempting to update MS Visual C++

I've seen both of those leave these files behind:

There are three named folders in the screenshot

01/10/14 06:14 pm | AdobeTemp
01/05/14 09:09 pm | Drivers
01/05/14 09:11 pm | Intel

I guess we'll wait for more info from abite

Intel logs normally go in that folder in the root...
...but AdobeTemp does look like an environment/path issue.

I installed MSE while ago. It makes a folder like this in the root. It just cleaned up after itself (unlike some installers).

Deleted files reappearing (coming back)
I delete a file or multiple files, usually it happens with files of the media type; pictures, videos, music, etc. I will delete the file, and empty the recycle bin just to see the file returns to its original directory a week to a few months later. I've only seen this behavior on Windows 7...
