Windows 7: Freeze, blank screen, several times a day - apparently not BSOD

Freeze, blank screen, several times a day - apparently not BSOD

For several weeks, several times a day my computer freezes, and if left, goes to a blank screen that's dark blue (almost black) with a lighter blue edge. From here, it requires a hard shutdown, and when rebooting, the usual screen about a shutdown not done correctly, offering boot to safe mode, etc.

Early on, the error message the went by mentioned Mailwasher, a mail screening utility that automatically checks for mail and pre-screens it before downloading it. I disabled the automatic features and now launch and use it manually, but that hasn't solved the problem. I saw one or two mentions of BlueScreen in the system logs, so went out to the Windows Seven BSOD forum and posted. Arc was very helpful and directed me to make a couple of changes, but those didn't stop the problem. In the last data I posted back, he saw no BSODs. The thread is here.

So, it's back to diagnosis. Can anybody help me to find and fix the problem? I'm not real experienced, but can follow instructions if they are not too technical. I have looked over some of the tutorials, but they mostly lost me, but I was able to collect the data according to instructions, using the SF_Debug_Tool v1.1.bat.

Surely there is information in a log file, or someplace that can help find the problem. The system logs show many "error" events, and an occasional "critical" event, but I don't know how to interpret them. The crash often happens when I'm not at the keyboard or overnight, so I don't see the error message, if there is one. My wife describes it as follows: playing solitaire (not MS Solitaire, but the old Solitude), cursor dsappears, after about 30 sec, screen goes blank, lights on reset button flashing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you haven't already done so you could try running a couple of utilities to see if you have any system file issues or hard drive issues. Run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (Option Two, Step 1.) If problems are found run the scan at least three times and reboot the computer immediately after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You could also try running a Disk Check. If you leave both boxes unchecked (Option One, Step 5) the scan will generate a report showing if there are any drive errors. If errors are found you could run the scan again selecting to fix file errors and/or physical errors.

Disk Check

If still no joy, one of the Forum experts prepared this troubleshooting guide with several other steps you can take including additional hardware checks.

BSOD occasionally, freeze 1-2 times a day
Long history with this issue. My machine basically freezes, all video stays the same, audio stop and it just 'hangs' like that until I manually hold the power switch. This happens about 1 to 2 times a day, depending on how long it has been on. It is NOT heat related, as it can happen 1 minute...
