Screen goes black Windows 7 not available on desktop

    Hello,

I turned my computer on this morning to find the following:

The screen - or desktop - is just black, there are no icons, nothing. There is no way to access Windows 7 or my computer other than through one window frame which opened that allows me to access all of the files on my computer.

Windows 7 obviously must still be running, otherwise i wouldn't be able to use my computer, It starts fine everytime, showing "Preparing your desktop" and all that, but once it's supposed to show desktop, there is just nothing, it's as if it's just not there anymore. It's just black.

I can still do anything I want, show movies, listen to music, work on MS Word, etc.

    Any help is appreciated!

"Preparing your desktop" is only showed on first logon to an account!
"one window frame which opened ". Is that the standard file explorer frame?
What happens if you double click on c:\windows\explorer.exe ?

    run regedit.exe. Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
what is value of "shell" in the block on the right?

What exactly fixed it? Was it a corrupt registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell ?
