Want to shrink volume and add it to other partition.

Hi, a few weeks back, I had created another partition to install Win 8.1 on it. I created that Win 8.1 partition with 150GB. I would like to shrink the Win 7 partition and add more volume to the Win 8.1 partition. I checked out the disk management window and had shrunk the Win 7 partition, but it didn't let me add more volume to the Win 8.1 partition. Is this possible? I must be doing something wrong. Thanks

Could you post a screenshot of your Disk Management using your
Snipping Tool. It will help us to know how to direct you. Check out the Tutorial if you are not familiar with doing it.

This is most likely the problem: Windows stores files at the end of your partition for things like hibernate and pagefile (for when your drive is thrashing). You need to disable/remove hibernate system file and pagefile.sys at least for the time being. After you can add it back if you want.

So first you need to remove hibernate and pagefile. Look it up, it's not too hard. Then you need to defrag the drive to get the best results. Then you can try shrinking/expanding the drive.

P.S add system restore to that list.

Also, when you are adding the new space what does the computer call the space? Unallocated data?

Members can't help you much until you satisfy bigmck's disk management screen shot request.

Win7 MBR drives can only have four volumes (4 primary or 3 primary + 1 extended)

Windows disk management can only grow to the right (towards the end of the drive) not to the left

3rd Party applications (minitools Partition Wizard) can utilize free space anywhere on the drive.

If you make a mistake and create dynamic disks, the system might not boot.

Please post the disk management screenshot.

    thanks.

As you can see, I have a Win 8.1, Win 7 and storage partition. I made the storage partition for when I want files to be accessible from one location.

Thanks, I read up a bit on minitool Partition Wizard (PW) and that application will do what you want.

I suggest that you download the bootable version and burn the ISO to a CD. You'll need a CD-R optical disc and you can use the Windows CD burning utility.

The tutorials on the minitool pages are very good, but you might want to wait for a SevenForums (SF) member who is better versed in PW than I am to help you. I don't know your comfort level with computers (I know that I don't know PW well enough to advise you)

Download the Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online bootable CD version, rightclick the ISO file to Burn using Windows Image Burner.

Boot CD, rightclick on C Windows 8 to Extend, borrowing as much space as you need from D Windows 7 as shown in How to extend partition easily with Partition Wizard - video help. Click OK and then Apply.

Well I was rather hoping this would have been tried by now having suggested the wizard earlier. It is not that hard to do.
