    Invalid product key on installation

I'm installing Windows 7 on a new computer and all is well till it prompts me to enter product key. I've tried and tried to enter it but I get an invalid key response every time. I'm now stuck. Any ideas on the fix or help will be greatly appreciated.....Thanks in advance.

Where did you get the product key from? Are you sure the product key you have is for the same version of Windows 7 that you are trying to install?

It's in the box with the disks. I've since learned that unless I have an installed version of XP on the computer already, this version of windows is useless. I tried to reinstall the XP version I have and that failed too. Unless I can get a full version of Windows 7 to install on this virgin system I will fail. My dilemma now is where I can get a trusted full version of Windows 7. I looked on Amazon for the full version of this software and saw at least three different types. Which one should I get is now the question.

Where did you get the Win 7 disk? Did you buy it in a store? It should have come with a 25 character Product Key. This is what has to be entered. If you are entering something else, that is your problem. == You stated in your message,
"unless I have an installed version of XP on the computer already, this version of windows is useless."
This is not true.If you have purchased a previous version of Windows that is not on any PC, you are have satisfied the requirement by Microsoft. You may then install a Win 7 Upgrade Version. You do not have to have the Full Retail Version.

My understanding of the OP's post is; he needs to have XP already installed before using the Windows 7 upgrade disk. Which according to MS is correct, you can't use a Windows 7 Upgrade to do a clean install on a fresh disk. Of course that's not 100% true, but you need to hack the registry to do so.
