How do I restore the attributes on a File Folder or change them back?

    I use Windows 7 64 bit.

I have a folder that was working properly. On a Windows 8 computer one day, it decided that my folder was corrupt and "fixed" it, now the properties show it as just "file", no longer a "file folder". There is nothing wrong with the drive, it is a usb drive, it is just the one folder.

I tried "open with" windows explorer, it didn't work. I tried Recuva, no luck. I used Photrec and got the data, but as a novice, the data was separated into files that I couldn't put back together again. so the data is there, I just can't access it anymore. Virus checks were clean.

How do I change the attributes back to "file folder" so I can get to my data please?

    thank you.

Evidently Windows does not allow a file to be marked as a folder such as by Attrib command. Do you have a Restore Point from before the glitch?

No, it is on a USB drive.

I would try to back up files on the drive as best you can. Then run a diagnostic on the drive. So far I've only run into one article similar that wasn't attributed(pun intended) to a virus. The thought was file corruption and run fdisk /f

I've done a chkdsk, no issues. I've run virus scans, no problems. My backup has hardware problems, so I'd really like to fix this, not format it (isn't that what fdisk does?).

Although I am on Windows 7, this definitely happened when the Windows 8 computer "repaired" my USB drive, there was nothing wrong with it before. I had to step away from the machine when it "repaired" so I didn't see exactly what happened.

    Any more ideas please?

    No prob. Everyone errors.

But I already did the chkdsk, no errors. Though I'm working on a Windows 7, it was definitely something that Windows 8 computer did during it's "repair" of the file.

Should I post this in the Windows 8 forum? Or leave it here? Or both? I still have access at times to the windows 8 machine if I need that to fix it.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

You could post on W8 if you like. I would run a diagnostic on the HD from the manufacturer. If the HD is WD then get their diagnostics for that model etc.. It should show if the HD needs a lot of retries to read the data.
