How to change .srt files back to unknown

hi, i accidentally changed the .srt files(subtitles) to be opened with notepad as a default program and checked the always use box.. i need to change it back to unknown so it can work again.

i tried filetypesman but it didnt change anything, any idea how to do it?

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Please manually create a System Restore Point:
    System Restore Point - Create

It usually does not hurt to leave notepad associated with an extension. However, if some app is not working for you because of this notepad association, then you should re-install that app. Hopefully, the re-installation process will fix whatever you changed.

If re-installing the app does not work for you, then you can use the reg file attached to this post to remove the notepad association. However, that reg file removes all major registry entries related to the file extension named .srt. You might still need to re-install whatever app is not working for you.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.srt]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.srt]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RecentDocs\.srt]

Find the file extension in question under this key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

Deleting the sub-key with the same name as the extension you want to un-associate will delete the default program association. You’ll have to kill and restart explorer.exe for this to take effect.

You may also need to remove the same sub key from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT as well.

Be sure to backup the registry before making any changes!

thanks sir george and usernameissues for the replies. username, i use bsplayer to automatically download the subtitles for the video i am watching. before i selected use notepad as default, bsplayer downloaded an unknown file with a .srt ending, now it downloads a notepad file with no .srt ending at all and my TV/DVD cannot read it.
i used your attached file and it did work and now it asks me to choose a program but it still has the notepad file icon and no .srt ending. bsplayer can read it but the TV cannot.

    thanks.

Please set Windows (file) Explorer to show file extensions:
File Extensions - Hide or Show
(or maybe you already have it set that way)

Restarting the computer should get rid of the notepad icon.

You might need to re-install the bsplayer app. If that does not fix the issue, then uninstall the bsplayer app before re-installing it. It might also help to restart the computer after each uninstall/re-install action - even if you are not prompted to restart by the installer.
