I'm not highly familiar with the program, but it has a good reputation.

I'd run it if I had suspicious issues, but I'd learn more about it before I categorically accepted its recommendations for deletions.

I'm sure some people run it regularly.

I do run Malwarebytes regularly; did you run it??

Are you running OK or do you still have symptoms?

I can't remember if I was logged in or not when I saw the link for the Registry Cleaner, but I did not run it and have now deleted it.

This problem with the sound of data transferring is still s bit of a mystery. It seem to be lasting for a much shorter time now. This evening when I started my machine and checked my email it took off again. I paused the indexing, no effect, I checked the CPU usage and nothing to show what was being used, but my processors was fluctuating between just a few % and 30%.

Windows by default runs maintenance only when the pc is idle, and usually around 1 am. So I doubt it's a maintenance thing.

So to recap here is what we know:

    • It's not windows cleaning itself
    • its not a backup utility
    • It's most likely not caused by your startup programs from what I can tell.

    Please do the following:

1.) It appears that you run mcafee antivirus. Please run a full scan with it, and make sure its updated before doing so.

2.) Download malwarebytes from my signature and let it update. Then perform a full scan with it as well. Malwarebytes saves a log file of what is found. You may delete anything it finds, and upload that log here to look at.

Ok, looks like nothing to malicious. Only some PUPS.

Now that all of that is removed, restart your pc and let us know if it continues. And I suggest keeping malwarebytes installed and scan with it every now and then.

Are you ever in a particular program or website when the issue occurs? Like the web browser or anything?

    Glad to hear your verdict.

I think that it seems to get started when checking email etc, but not only then. And doing the rebuild of the search index has certainly reduced but not eliminated the issue. And what are PUPS ?

    PUP: potentially unwanted program.

In post 23, you say pausing indexing has no effect.

In post 27, you say rebuilding the search index reduced but did not eliminate the issue.

Do you need indexing at all? I've never used it. If I want to search for something, I use "Everything" search engine.

Are your search terms taken from file names? Or from words within the file?

My searches are from both file names and content as that seemed the most thorough. What is this everything Search Engine, is it for searching your computer ?

    WOW !!!
    I just Googled it.
This looks like just the ticket
I will readjust the search facility in Control Panel to nil if I can
    Many thanks !

I am running Win7 Home Premium and for some time now my machine will periodically start transferring or copying date from one place to another. At least that is what it sounds like. When this is happening my machine becomes unusable. It happens at various time but mostly when I start to use it after start up.

    Any ideas anyone ?
Sysinternals Process Monitor may tell you which processes are responsible. IME, this has been antivirus, Superfetch, ReadyBoot, use of large Windows Libraries with stupid programs that frequently scan the whole things and have no way to change their sources (e.g. Microsoft junk like WMP), Distributed Link Tracking Client, and the Search Indexer, the only one worth keeping IMO. I've never understood how people pick up all these viruses. I've done on-demand virus scans for 99.99999% of my computer usage over the last 25 years, and I've never had any kind of malware. For me, AV programs have only caused problems, and they continue to do so to this day, case in point, "Malwarebytes" 2. The first time I ran it, it locked up the whole computer. The second time, it caused a BSOD. It was the reason I recently rebuilt my otherwise rock-solid PC. And I am not alone on this. Their forums have numerous such complaints.

Microsoft in particular loves to pointlessly scan entire drives, and the hard drive noise drives me nuts. For example, if WMC is running and I plug in an external drive, say, to perform a backup, it pointlessly scans the whole drive, which is not one of its sources, and for which it never presents any of the files it finds on it, and this takes a while for a HD with a few hundred thousand files on it, as my SyncBackSE file backups do. I haven't found a solution to that. But disabling all the other useless junk mentioned above quieted my hard drives, particularly the boot drive, back when I was using HDs as boot drives. Again, Process Monitor may reveal the particular culprits.
