    Desktop won't boot after week of inactivity.


    Hi,

    After a week of absence due to a bereavement in the family I came home to find my desktop will not boot up.
    The pc, modem, monitor, speakers all run from the same surge protected extension lead, everything else is working.
    Having removed the side panel I can see the motherboard light is lit which presumably means power is getting through.
    I always turn the power off when I am going away for any period of time, from the power supply first and then the mains, I reverse this process upon return.
    I have tried holding the power button for some time in case of hibernation but nothing seems to work.

    Any help would be much appreciated.

    If you see (and hear) absolutely no activity when you push the power button (no lights, no fans, no nothing), the problem is most likely the power-supply. The light just means that one voltage of the several produced is working, but tells you nothing about the others. PSUs don't last forever, and some don't last half that long. The easiest way to test is to connect another power-supply that you know is good, perhaps from an old computer that you have around.
