In message 4 (with the screenshot of your problem) you say you clicked on the Chrome Icon. If you click on the Start Icon, can you read it? What about if you pin another program to the Taskbar, can you read it when you click on it?

Yes the lettering is in black when I click the Start icon.
Whatever other icon I pin to the Taskbar , if it has a pop-up menu or list, the letters will appear
in white. The background color of the pop-up menu for the Start icon is the same (grey) as the others.
One slight difference I noticed was that the pop-up menus I cannot read have a noticeable black
border whereas the Start one does not. Also, when I mouse over the items in the lists I cannot read,
the color changes to black lettering on a blue background - which I can easily read. Weird!
Do you any 3rd party software that starts when your PC boots (or when you log in)?
If yes, have you tried disabling these items?
I've disabled all optionals at startup, no change.
Thanks.
After trying all of the options offered without any success, I think a repair install is probably in order... BTW did you create a new user account like Shawn suggested??
Yes I did try and yes I'm just trying to avoid a re-install - but it probably is the final solution
I just have to muster the courage!
Don't do the Clean Install yet. Have you tried a Repair Install This will not change any of your settings.
