    Index files-what happens?

When doing a search in a folder, a little note (Suggestion) always appears at the top that says “Searches might be slow in non-indexed locations etc.” and suggests that I index them “click to add index”.
I might want to do this but I have my files organized so that I know where they are and can find them. They are mostly in an external drive.
If I index them, is it going to scatter them all over the place and put them in new locations so that I will no longer know where to look for them? In other words, how drastic is this indexing going to be? I don’t want to have to do a System Restore so that I know where things are again.

Indexing does not move or change where files are. All it does is create an index file so that search can be performed faster by going to that file first.

    Thank you bpcopter.

Well now the inevitable silly question: Why didn't bozo (Microsoft) just set it up like this in the first place? Never mind, I know the answer. I guess I’ll go ahead and click and see what happens.
