Get the exact program name and path

Windows 7 File associations Issue.

I have a file-type that is associated to some executable somewhere on the hard drive.
When I dbl-click, it runs that program.

Windows7 only provides a string description in the type field that has nothing to do with where the program is located, and what its actual file-name is.

How can I find the exact file location and file name that is being executed when I dbl-click an icon ?

You can either hover over the icon for the path, or you can right click on it and choose "Properties". On the "Shortcut" tab you'll see "Target" with a text box beside it. The text box contains your path and file name.

It sounds like you have an MSI-based shortcut. This are installed as part of Microsoft Installer packages. The shortcuts don't actually point to executables but to Microsoft Installer IDs that tell it what to do, usually check to be sure the program is up to date, or run some run-time configuration. The Office pack uses these, for example.
