Windows 7: Sometimes I need to start applications twice.

Sometimes I need to start applications twice.

Some of my applications never start on the first try. They show up in the taskmgr window but never open up minimized or maximized. Sometimes I can't even kill them after I press the "End Process" option.

When I can successfully kill the application at the task manager, then the application opens up on the second try and works fine.

Applications so far doing this are IE8, Power Desk, Word 2007, Money 2006 and IDM Manager. Some other utilities allow me to run multiple occurrences so they open up while the first attempt is in la-la land.

This can occur on a 50/50 chance.

I had no problems with these applications while using Vista64 SP2. This started after the upgrade to Win7 64 last Thursday.

By the way, when the application hangs up without starting, it does not show that it is using any CPU or memory in the taskmgr. In other words, the computer is basically idle and I can go ahead and run other applications/utilities.

Trying to avoid a full clean install until I know for sure what the problem really is. All drivers were updated before the upgrade and some after.

Anyone else experiencing these symptoms?

Windows 7 x64

I have seen some posts with some weird problems after upgrading from Vista. Don't know if it means anything or not.

Just for the heck of it, maybe you could redo the shortcuts that start the programs.

Thanks Saltgrass.

Your suggestion was positive since some shortcuts were set for "Run in XP Mode".

Applying hints posted by other members, may have also helped in solving the problem.

1) In "Power Option", set to spin down HDD after two hours vs. 5 Mins. My Samsung HDD takes too long to wake up.

2) Adjusted "Paging File Size" on each HDD to windows recommended value. Don't know why but total value was set to 44Gb. Set to 9Gb total as recommended.
