Vista was a very good OS. Windows 7 is an equally good OS.
Vista became a very good OS after SP1. Great after SP2. Pre SP1, not so much.

Win 7 is awesome. Even at the earliest of beta testing stages it was.

I had spent quite a bit of time messing with the beta, so I knew it was going to be stable and I knew there would be some aggravations.

All in all I am still glad I took the chance to migrate to W7 on my primary work computer. There are only 2 things that are annoying:
    1. Adobe Acrobat PDF converter does not work with Office in W7 64 bit.

    2. My high dollar Logitech mouse is too glitchy to use in W7 64 bit.

Other than those two software makers dragging their behind on these updates, I would call W7 a pretty exceptional new release.
On the mouse issue, have you updated to the latest version of Logitech Setpoint? If not, that may resolve your issues.

I switched to 7 on a old Pentium M system that could not run aero. I love it. Here's what I like

    1. The Classic Interface. I switched from the Vista Basic interface because of window redrawing lag. I love the big icons on the taskbar; they allow me to fit more programs on the taskbar. I know that this feature is not unique to the classic interface though.
    2. Beautiful icons, big, and redesigned
    3. Start menu search -- the killer feature that has been refined since Vista -- now it is faster and more accurate
    4. More intuitive access to computer settings
    5. Aero Snap
    6. Program icons on taskbar that stack by default
    7. Extended battery life

    What I don't like

    1. Laggy window redrawing, still present but not that much of a bugger anymore
    2. Online gaming lag, although I won't be gaming on this laptop

Oddly enough, that issue solved itself with the latest Logitech driver update supplied by Windows 7 update. Gotta love self healing.

I switch to Windows 7 from XP 64-Bit Pro and totally love it. My favourite version of Windows yet. No regrets. I'm not bothered about the lack of classic start menu either.

satchmo, what do you mean by xp styled menu? I think it looks more like the vista menu than the xp menu.
I was using the really old-school Windows 95 style classic menu for Windows XP and Windows Vista, until Windows 7 no longer support such option.

I switched from Win XP to Win 7 on my older laptop (dell inspiron 640m: intel core 2 duo 1.83GHz 1gb ram) because I lost my XP cd ( i found it now ). Everything was ok at first, and I got past the annoyances I had. However, it all comes down to performance:

Once I turn off all the special effects Win 7 runs worse than XP. When I have a lot of windows open, there is noticeable lag from time to time. And once I get Matlab running, the slowdowns hit even harder.

The bottom line is, Win 7 is fine if you have a top of the line computer, I would use it. But 7 doesnt use what resources it has visely. I would have to go back to XP, or maybe go back to Ubuntu, or both to get the performance I know I have from my laptop.

As for all the improvements for the UI, I have two answers: object doc + launchy :)

Incorrect. 7 runs better on my secondary machine (and spec machine) using a P4 1.5 GHz non-hyperthreaded processor. You just have your system setup wrong with not latest drivers or something.

That's really cool. So there's no problem running 7 on older hardware, then...
