Transfer Pictures

Is there an easy way to transfer the pictures in my photo gallery to my external hard drive? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Please provide some more info...

Is your "photo gallery" on your phone or tablet? If so, what brand/model? if not, where is it?

Is it from Apple's "iCloud" system?

Have you installed software and/or drivers on your PC to communicate with the phone/tablet when connected via USB cable? If so, what kind? If not, why not?

The Android phones from Samsung use Kies software (which also installs USB driver software to communicate with the phone in "MTP mode", which is similar to how many cameras communicate). I feel the Kies software to be much too bloated and intrusive. So I've gone with PdaNet+ (and FoxFI) to support USB connectivity to my Galaxy S4, both to the internal storage and external SD card storage in the phone.

When connected in MTP mode, the phone device will appear only in Windows Explorer (unless you have something like the whole Kies software package and its GUI). As with all MTP connections the internal/external storage of the phone does NOT get a Windows drive letter assigned. Drive letters are only assigned when a removable device connects in MSC mode, which is not how these phones connect.

So, no drive letter. Only Windows Explorer. But if you use Explorer you can then navigate to your phone, then open it to reveal "internal storage" or "external storage", and then open either of those to reveal the folders, and probably your DCIM folders where pictures are stored, etc. Then simple drag/drop using Explorer from the phone's folders to your hard drive's folders will accomplish what you want.

This is quite "manual" using Windows Explorer and drag/drop, because that's all you can do with MTP devices. That's why you might prefer the more user-friendly GUI using something like the Samsung Kies software which provides an actual user interface to access the phone storage and permit "sync" (a term I detest).

Anyway, this gets you started. But we need more info about your equipment, and what you've done or tried so far to get to the device via USB.

I believe they are referring to windows live photo gallery.
Yes it is very easy. Navigate to your pictures folder. Drag all the files or click edit-select all. (ctrl a on the keyboard works too)then drag and drop it onto your external hard drive.

You can backup all your files (music, docs, pics etc.) to your external by doing the following:

click computer. Double click local disk C. Double click the users folder. Double click your login name. Now open another computer folder and open your external hard drive. Highlight everything in the user folder and drag and drop it onto your external hard drive.

Hi,
If the external device is connected and powered on it should appear on the Navigation pane on the left column in photo gallery,

This is a Import image but the device will still be listed as another drive letter in this case K,
Then all you need to do is simply Copy the images and Paste them onto the external drive listing,

In addition to all the above methods you can select all the pictures that you want to transfer by left click on the first one & hold down the Shift Key & then select the last one. This will highlight all the selected ones. Now Right Click & a window should drop down with a list of options & one should be "Send To". If your external drive is connected & recognised in Explorer, then all you need do select "Send To" & all those pictures will be sent to your external drive.

This will copy them so you will end up with the copy on the the external drive & the original on the computer drive. If you don't want them on the computer you can delete them. The advantage of using copy rather than drag & drop or cut & paste is that if anything goes wrong in the process you will still have the originals.
