Windows 7: Turn Laptop On when Lid is opened

However, I was also able to set the Power Options so that the laptop would wake up and restore Windows when I opened the lid. So far, I have been unable to set that behavior in Windows 7.

Do anyone have some advise for me on how to accomplish this?

You refer to sleep/hibernate as though they are the same thing. They are very different. When a computer is asleep, it is still "on" for all intents and purposes. It is simply in a low-power state. Sleep can be ended by the lid opening because the OS is still technically "listening." In hibernation, the computer is completely off. All volatile information has been saved to the hard drive. You would have to press a power button to come back from hibernation.

Personally, I don't allow computers to sleep or hibernate. Both are usually more trouble than they are worth. I'd rather start fresh.

Windows 10 - 64 bit

Hi all.

I realise this is an old thread but I came across this post looking for a solution that no-one in the above posts could provide. I tried all the above suggestions, ensuring that the computer is definitely sleeping (not hibernating), which unfortunately did not solve the problem. I did however discover a solution myself.

It seems that the specific laptop I am using (HP EliteBook Folio) has an option in the BIOS (not in windows) which controls whether the computer turns on when opening the lid.

Note that the menu options and button combinations may/will be different if you use a different brand laptop and the option may not be present at all. However, this is confirmed working on an HP EliteBook Folio.

Steps to enable wake when lid is opened:

1. While the computer is starting up (while the HP logo is on the screen), press the Delete key.
2. A menu should be shown with various options to press. One of the options should be "F10 BIOS Setup." If so, press F10.
3. The Bios should load. Under the "Advanced" menu, select "Built-in Device Options."
4. Scroll down to reveal two options (which must be ticked):
- "Wake unit from sleep when lid is opened" (tick it)
- "Power on unit when lid is opened" (tick it)
5. Save and exit

Hope this helps someone.
