I'd be keeping an eye on my processes in the Task Manager as go about my browsing to see if anything's spiking the CPU at the times it's freezing. If nothing's spiking, I'd run a Disk Check on my hard drive to rule out corrupted sectors. Freezing and unresponsiveness can be a sign of a failing drive. If the hard drive checks out with no errors, then it's on to perform a SFC /scannow via an elevated command prompt to rule out corrupted system files causing the system to hang then I'd re-evaluate what software I have installed (and where I sourced the exe's for them) to determine if one of them has cause the behavior.

Hi Jules I'll check out those links, thanks. I always run my Sunday cleanup ritual (CCleaner, MBytes and SASW scans, Raxco Perfect Disk) and also checked out Task Manager-no spikes.
It doesn't actually freeze FliGi7, it's just a lag in the typing appearing. If you can put up with it the browser will carry on in every other way.
Also I've run several disk diagnostics and RAM tests. No problem there.
The intriguing thing is, it renders Chrome and FF virtually unusable, but in five weeks it has not occurred in Opera.
I have not tried SFC/scannow, do you recommend that, given that the system does not hang or freeze in any way?
    Thanks for the input guys:)

Personally, I'd try everything I listed, even if nothing appeared to be directly related to the fact that it only happens when typing in FF/Chrome. It could be a number of things. It could also be a driver issue. Do you have the latest trackpad/keyboard drivers installed from the laptop manufacturer's website? If so, does Windows Update offer any new ones? If you originally installed them from the manufacturer's site, you could try uninstalling and let Windows Update install what it thinks is best and try those out. Or, if you had Windows Update initially install them, you might try uninstalling and installing the latest from your laptop manufacturer's website.

Just thinking out loud. This type of activity could be a number of things. Better to start weeding everything out to narrow it down.

There you go. Regardless of whether those fixes are readily apparent, you can see why it's good to try various different troubleshooting techniques that might discover something that needed to be fixed regardless of the problem at hand or something that you didn't realize had an effect on it.

Continue down the troubleshooting path and possibly try uninstalling and reinstalling drivers as I described above if nothing else is seeming to work.

Ok. I'm back and I'm in Chrome browser. I'll go and play in Google+ and see if the problem is sorted. If not I'll do some further tests as you suggest and post again tomorrow. I'll post again tomorrow anyway to let you know whether it is fixed
For now, thanks very much for your help Greg, Julian and FliGi7, cheers, John:)
