Thanks for the pointer. I've worked through it all, and unfortunately to no avail, so I've decided to do a clean re-install.
This now seems the line of least resistance, especially as I have everything backed up.. It should give the backup program a good test and see if it was money well spent!

There is no misfortune in doing a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 as if you stick with the steps, tools and methods in the tutorial you'll end up with a perfect install - and keep it for as long as you do.

Clean Reinstall Windows 7 is a good thing. It's like a big vitamin pill for a Windows 7 computer. Puts the vim and vigor back in your computer again. I haven't done it often but I always enjoyed the results.
