    It looks like you didn't put the backslash in the SFC command.
    You entered SFC Scannow
    It should be SFC /Scannow

    Hi Greg

    Thanks for the pointer. I've worked through it all, and unfortunately to no avail, so I've decided to do a clean re-install.
    This now seems the line of least resistance, especially as I have everything backed up.. It should give the backup program a good test and see if it was money well spent!

    I really appreciate all of the help and assistance that we get from the forum, it feels like a real community.

    There is no misfortune in doing a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 as if you stick with the steps, tools and methods in the tutorial you'll end up with a perfect install - and keep it for as long as you do.
