Clipboard (Win 7) Automatically Clearing Before Paste

    I do a lot of copy/pasting.
    1) My normal practice is to copy something (e.g. Firefox Web Page, or something in a file in a different directory)
    2) close the Application (Firefox) - or - that File
    3) Open Windows Explorer and Browse to point of Paste
    4) Right Click and Select Paste.

Since I moved to Windows_7 from XP, I find that the above method erases the Clipboard PRIOR to Paste so Paste shows gray.

However, if I remember to leave the Application or File Open from which I made the copy, Paste works correctly.

    ================
    QUESTION:

    1) Is this Normal for Windows_7 ?
    2) Is there a Registry Tweak that will resolve this (Keep Clipboard contents even if App for File has been closed)?

Try it when booted to Safe Mode with Networking. If it works okay there then you have something installed that runs at boot time that is causing the problem.

See here: How to perform a clean boot in Windows

    Slartybart:

    Hello Dw85745.

I'm not very familiar with this type of issue, but please try running System File Checker. SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Can you also try following the Clean Boot suggestion.

    Thank you,
    VinnyBuxton

    VinnyBuxton:
    Ran SFC, No Errors.

    Ztruker:
Did a clean boot and still had the problem. So coming to conclusion a Win7 issue. Hope yourself or someone can confirm.
To repeat, Open Firefox, copy some text from any web page, close Firefox, Open Notepad, and try and Paste what you copied. Paste is NOT available.

There might be a conflict with the Office clipboard and the Windows clipboard. I recall something about this a long time ago. Either limit the Office clipboard to one item or turn off Office Clipboard.

I haven't found any exact instructions (Office '97 is quite old - cool that it works though), so you'll have to poke around in Office preferences (or clipboard mgr might be a separate beast with options outside of prefs) and use the built-in Office help to find info.

Works okay for me. Opened Firefox, copied some stuff to the clipboard then closed Firefox.
Opened Word (2007) and pasted the data from the clipboard, worked fine.

As a test, try pasting into Notepad or Wordpad instead of Word, see if that works.

Slartybart: I'm most likely wrong, but both Windows and Office should be using the User32.dll Clipboard functions (that is for 32 bit).

ZTruker: Thanks for feedback. Had previously tried to Notepad and get same No copy results.
I shut off a lot of Services and Autoruns (mostly drivers) when I installed Win7, so may have created my own issue.
However, with a clean boot most of those should be non-functioning anyway. Will try and check on when User32 is loaded or called by the Kernel as Copy/Paste has been a CORE capability of Windows since the beginning of Windows.
