Windows shuts down but power stays on

    Hello everyone,

I'm have an issue with my recently built PC (recent as in built 3 days ago). I have a brand new copy of Windows that was freshly installed and once the installation completes and I enter Windows desktop before I even install any drivers or programs if I try to shutdown the PC from Windows I get the "Windows is shutting down..." message then my screen goes black (as I expect it to if it's shutting down). I hear my HDD power down, but all the lights on the motherboard is still lit and the fans are still blowing and the PC never really powers off, even if I wait a while the PC never powers off. I'll have hold the power button down to power the machine down. Rebooting the machine back into Windows yields the same problem. I've tried everything I could to get the machine to shut down from Windows and I am stumped... I've tried the following:

    1. Cleared the BIOS by removing battery
    2. Updated BIOS
    3. Made sure no USB drives are plugged into the PC
    4. Booted into Safe Mode and the get the same problem during shutdown except the monitor does not go black. I actually see the PC freeze up at the "Windows is shutting down..." message and hear the HDD power down
    5. Made sure the machine is set to shut down and not hibernate or standby
    5. Re-installed Windows 7 Professional and got the same issues and repeated the above steps again
    6. Re-installed Windows 7 Professional on HDD instead of SSD, no luck
    7. Checked Power Management settings and no indication of an option for the PC to have power even after a shutdown

I have no idea what the issue can be. I've not tried booting into a Linux disc to see if that works but will probably do that next. There was a new BIOS update for the Gigabyte Z97X UD5H from the F7 revision to F8 that I did do the update. I assumed that that new BIOS version might not be good so I re-flashed back to F7 and I'm still have the problem.

    Any ideas for me?

    Here is my PC specs:
    Intel Core i7 4790K
    Gigabyte Z97X-UD5h BIOS rev. F7
    8GB Corsiar Vengence
    ATI Radeon 5850
    Corsair Hydro Cool H100i
    Corsair RM 750 PSU
    OCZ Vertex II 90GB SSD
    Western Digital Blue 500GB HDD
    Corsair Carbide 500R

Check the BIOS under Power Management & see if there are any options available. Also check each lead from the Power Supply to make sure they are connected correctly to the right item on the mother board.

I've checked under the BIOS for any power management options for the PC and all the options to wake the PC from keyboard, mouse, or LAN are disabled. All cables looks tight and in the right spots.

A lot of mother boards leave the USB ports powered when the computer is shut down, which can be useful for phone battery charging etc..
When I shut down my PC, I turn off the power at the wall as I don't like leaving it on, which also reduces my electricity bill.

You could check with your mother board supplier about your problem & get their opinion. Perhaps the board is faulty & needs to be replaced.
