    The problem is that technology changes so fast that you do not have the time to really become an expert. I wrote my first program in 1958 and spent 35 years in large system operating system development. But at no point did I have the feeling that I was an expert. Once you crawled up the hill trying to understand system x, there was already system x+1. One has to specialize in certain areas where you are interested and comfortable. But then you become only a "partial" expert - and that's what most knowledgeable people probably are.

    I'd say an average user SHOULD be able to do those things, but most can't! They can install and use apps, and if told where to go they can run fix it apps like defrag!
