Can't boot with graphics card driver enabled

    Hello everyone,

I've run into a bit of an issue since a recent hd wipe and fresh windows 7 install.

After getting windows re-installed, then installing drivers for my video card (AMD Radeon 6500 series), I run into an issue where my computer won't completely boot. It just goes to a blue screen with a windows logo on it that only fills maybe 2/3 of my monitor. No start button, no icons, no mouse pointer.

If I reboot into safe mode, that works. And if I disable the video card using the hardware manager, I'm able to then reboot windows normally. If I try re-enabling the video card drivers I just run into the previously mentioned boot issue again.

    Things I've tried already...

    1. Updated all drivers using Driver Fusion (Driver Fusion | Update, manage and monitor drivers & devices | Treexy)
    2. Tried both AMD and Intel Drivers (same result)
    3. Ran windows update to ensure everything else was up to date.

If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks!!

    Welcome to Sevenforums,

Have you also reinstall the Intel Chipset utility software given with your PC?

What's in Bios settings, have you disable the onboard graphics for setting the AMD primary.

    Thanks for the reply!

I don't have a chipset utility that came with my PC. But I confirmed on the intel site that I'm running the latest versions (Intel® Driver Update Utility). Is that the same thing?

For my setup, I checked and don't see any options to disable onboard graphics, just SATA, USB and audio options.

Yes for Intel, its the same thing.

Also you should have the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) to reinstall.

Strange you haven't got that Bios option (i do no know well your board).

Is your graphics card well inserted onto its PCI-e Slot? You might want to unmount it and replace it again just to check.

    Thanks NoN,

I'm unable to locate any software that came with my PC. However I checked for that MEI on Intel's site and they said I was running the latest version.

I also checked the video card, pulled it, then re-inserted it. No change.

I'm not sure it is a hardware issue. I have a Linux Mint disk that will boot into a demo mode for the OS and the display is fine in the Linux demo.

Here is a pic I took of the BIOS setting for the on board hardware.

Sorry to have wasted your time NoN!

I figured out the issue. I had an hdmi cable plugged into the graphics card and had it running to my plasma TV. For some reason when I updated the graphics card drivers, it then detected the hdmi connection and made the TV the default display.

I was able to change it over to using my monitor, and everything looks great.

Lesson learned - if anyone else encounters this - don't plug in an hdmi cable until you've finished reinstalling and updating Windows.

    Thanks!

    Thanks Maxie!

The gateway site is a great resource for drivers, etc.
