Correcting faulty My Documents move

Hi,

Had to buy a new hard drive to replace faulty and had Win 7 SP1 reloaded. Downloaded other programs and a mega load of updates but before adding back user files decided to try and utilise the D partition.

I tried to move My Documents from C Drive to D Drive following MSN instructions. They were not as detailed as ones I have found since on your site and I seem to have screwed up the naming.

System restore was switched off so cannot use that. I would like to either get back to default or have documents pointing to D but with the name My Documents in the file tree.

When I tried to use the restore default in Location it would not let me finish the process.

Attached is a screen shot that shows my issue.

I have read through many pages here User Folders - Restore Default Location and would like to know if Option 2 would solve the issues or is there an easier way. I worry about screwing it up again

Thanks Brink - will it also correct the Drive D label under Libraries?

Hi Brink,
Followed the tutorial and it seems to have worked apart from only labelling the file as Documents and not My Documents. Is there an easy way to change that - IE do I just rename it in C,Users etc?

Did that and actually went through and redid it but no change - have restarted several times since.

One other thing I noticed is that (user name) is actually My Document - the people who reinstalled it used that for some completely unknown reason. I have changed it via User Accounts and used the new user name in the registry for this change for Documents and then later also changed it as per here User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name. I noticed however that it has not changed any of the other registry entries in shell folders.

Should I manually change these to the new user name?

Sorry not sure if this is a dumb question - I changed the user account name which is the admin account so are you saying if I create a new admin account with a different name and then delete the old account it will correct all the registry entries? I still have no files to copy over as not yet put anything back onto the laptop.

If I did not explain it very well here are two shots showing the "My" missing and the user name under shell folders - BoAsus is the one I wanted to use and now have as the only user name.

If it's not "My Documents", then yeah it would be easier to create a new administrator user account to use instead of this broken one.

Thanks for bearing with me on this Brink. Not sure what you mean by "correct". When they reloaded win 7 for some reason the PC name and user name was My Document.

I have now changed that to BoAsus (which is what I want) as shown in shell folders for Personal and at the top of the other capture showing the route.

So no problem to use as is - just still do not have the My in My Documents.

Sorry if I am being thick but if I create a new administrator account with a new name is it actually going to make any difference?
Will I have a complete new set of shell folders with the new user name?
Or, as mentioned before (and I am sure it could not be that simple ), could I just manually change the entries in shell folders from My Document to BoAsus?
