You don't have permission to open this file . . . but it's MY file.

I'm receiving this message on pretty much every Office file I try to open - word, publisher etc. I've tried changing ownership but get an "access denied" message. I'm the only one who uses this computer. I tried doing a clean start up with same problem. I'm not computer tech savvy but can follow directions well.

    Welcome to Windows 7 Forum.

You could try doing a repair on MS Office to see if that helps.
Open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office, Right Click on it & select Change, this will open a panel with a couple of Repair Options, which you can try.

In which folder are the files?
Right click on 1 of the files->properties->security->advanced. Post a screenshot.
Right click on 1 of the files->properties->security->owner. Who's the owner of the file?
