Yeah I got my letter from HP the other day
wasn't expecting them to send an upgrade kit LOL since I was told only people who bought their PC after June 16 would receive an upgrade. I bought my laptop on the 14th and I still get mine =P

Does anyone know if the keys you receive in the upgrade programme can be used in a clean install of Win7? The discussion so far seems to be centering on what you can do with the upgrade media, rather than the upgrade keys.
We've just bought a couple of HP workstations, and ideally we would do a clean install of Win7 on there, run it in the 120-day trial mode, and simply insert the upgrade keys when they finally arrive.
Neither our supplier nor HP Netherlands can/will tell us whether the above is possible, though.
You will be given the option To do a Custom Install note it is not recommended. More over it does not make a difference IMO because to do a reinstall of Windows 7 you'll have to roll back your system to Vista at least that what is stated on the Vista 64 instruction sheet. I don't think this applies to you not sure what we are doing is the same thing. I want to keep my data you want a clean machine there's a difference?
Keep your HP Assistant & Windows 7 DVD your HP Recovery disks for Windows &and these instruction for future useYes that's correct regarding the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD not the Windows 7 DVD. Point being watch what you doing and for God's sake follow the instructions. Everything turned out well for me but I've been installing and upgrading since the 80's and I gotta tell you this is different. I think we will all have to get a license before we can move forward. The question is can we upgrade? Yes MS say I can go to Professional or Ultimate according to the Upgrade Advisor. Does that mean I'll still need the HP Vista backup disks, beats me. okay, guys, I hav a HP DV5, and running Vista HP32bit,
I would like to upgrade it to 7 HP 32 bit. but I dont like to install the upgrade version, like to do a fresh instalation, then how can I do that?
am I must need to buy 7HP ? or only 7HP Upgrade version?
if I buy the Upgrade version how can I do a clean Instalation?

I recently bought HP pavilion Dv6 1113TX notebook. it came with windows home premium. Since my model is elegible for upgrade i have already ordered the upgrade kit through Hp.The transaction has been accepted but i have not got it yet.
I was thinking of formatting the harddrive & do a clean installation of windows 7 RTM without activating it now & later when i get the upgrade key, use it to activate the windows.
Can I do that, without reinstalling it again?
I do not want to do anymore installations

You guys are making things more complicated than necessary. A Custom Install will erase the data from the HDD. That's as Clean as it gets. Having said that you'll need your HP recovery Disks, your Upgrade Assistant DVD plus the Windows 7 DVD kept in a safe place. You can not reinstall Windows 7 without them. You'll also need to keep the instructions that came with the Kit. I can not comment on what happens with a Window 7 full license it is not the same as an upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista. The HP issue is only an issue if you want to keep the HP software and you're doing the HP provided Upgrade Kit
So Jimmy, did you perform a clean install or just the upgrade? Do you think the computer would be slower installing the upgrade on a computer that has only been used for a few weeks than performing the clean install?
It is never about performance, but stability. I would always be in favor of a clean install, but if the custom install allows you to completely clear the drive before continuing, then thats roughly the same thing. As someone else said, you are making this much more complicated than it needs to be.
Just switch to using Windows Live Mail. It runs circles around Windows Mail, and has even gotten me to switch from using Outlook for my personal e-mail.
I think you are misunderstanding slightly what I want to do, and I believe ssujee has the same intention.
We cannot do a Custom Install from the HP upgrade kit, as we do not yet have the HP upgrade kit.
We want to install Windows 7 RTM now, and use it under the 120 day trial mode. Only when our HP upgrade kit finally arrives will we be able to insert the Windows 7 key -- assuming that works, which is our question.
