Jumping files/folders

Hopefully this is the right forum section to post this.

The problem is when I open any folder with files/folders in it the files in the very right column jump to the left if I click (double click) on them. I captured a short video of what's going on. Red star - left click and the blue star - right click.

I've been searching around ever since I started using Windows 7 to find the way to fix it but couldn't find the solution. Didn't have that in XP. Is there any way to fix that? Makes me

every time I want to open something and it just jumps away from me.

Hey Mike,

When you have your Folder Options set to "double-click to open an item", then that is the default action to scroll the item into view.

To stop this, you could set to use "single-click to open an item" instead. This way you can just hover to select the file without it scrolling into full view.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I knew about "single-click to open an item". I think it was already available in Windows 98 if not in 95. Don't remember. Definitely in XP. I kind of always liked double click option for opening files and folders and of course, got used to it over so many years. Anyway, what you're saying is with Windows 7 it's impossible to have double click without jumping just like it was in XP?

PS How did you make my video look like that? I was trying to use YouTube button but it would just do something weird - link with the whole bunch of *****

There's not a way to stop it that I know of.

You would use the part in red after the equal sign from the URL of the YouTube video in the [youtube] bb code to embed it in your post.

If you mean the display of file names in the List view at the right end of what you have in the video, I think it's just Windows' way of putting the focus on the full file name without the user having to manually scroll. A whole lot of that action depends upon the Display resolution and the size of the window in how much of the List is displayed. The List view is the only time I see the horizontal scroll bar appear. And it works the same with Folders that have longer names.

Berton,

Here is exactly what I want to accomplish. I connected my XP hard drive and captured a video of the same situation behavior there.

As you can see there is no jumping at all. Any way to force Win 7 to do the same?

I see what you are saying and the same thing happens in Windows Vista. What happens in Win7 also happens in Win8.1. But it seems to be only in the List View in Windows Explorer.

Another way is to select the file with the right mouse button and that will popup the menu directly. It will still scroll the full filename into view but will also show the menu without having to reselect the file. Maybe that helps you.

Thanks passmorel, This is a good idea but I still would like to find a solution to be able to double click on the file/folder just like it was in XP. I know there are a lot of very smart people around the World who can find the way to fix this annoying MS bug.
