Computer too fast: laptop fan blaringly loud, everyone leaves the room

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CS390C laptop, which I bought in August 2009. Since 2010, whenever the computer is hot, the fan roars violently about 45-50 seconds per minute. Women with loud-screaming baby twins ask me to keep it down. Everyone else leaves the room. I can't watch movies without subtitles.

I usually just do simple tasks on my computer, and I don't need it to be very fast. In fact, I wouldn't mind if it was 10 times slower if it would just shut up. Changing the fan would solve the problem, but I don't want to do that.

How can I muzzle the beast?

"How can I muzzle the beast?"

Download a Temperature monitoring program, and report back with the Temps, it may be its getting to hot hence the fan powering at full speed :)

Replace the fan. There should be a video online showing how to do so, or at least how to disassemble your model enough to get to it to replace it. You can then google the part number or ask Google now for the replacement fan for your model PC.

When you get in there you may find it caked with dust so you can clean it with plastic vacuum tip and alchohol on q-tips to see if it stops the noise.

While the top 2 answers are best,

Also try a power setting that is lower, like power saver plan.

Click type power options in the search. Click power options in the results. Choose power saver. Restart. The pc will run at a slower speed, but will use less cpu power and should not cause the fan to run so loud.
