The term "a long time" is subjective; how long does it take in actual minutes and seconds? You could also try using MSconfig for diagnostic purposes.
In hours, it takes 3 hours, for now it takes 1 Hour and 35 Minutes, some services are running, and I have tried the msconfig procedure.
3 hours, or 1.5 hours, or ANY HOURS is a ridiculous start up time.
I don't know if you did every step in the tutorials already suggested ...

What I would do if I saw those times is do a Safe Mode startup.
Here is a tutorial by Brink: Safe Mode

That will give you a very basic Windows startup for services and programs without making any tweaks.
If Safe Mode takes hours, that info can help others here give you the best advice on what to do next to fix this.

Hi. I guess i have a very simillar issue. it took long than 1 hour to startup. ı tried everything written here before i read the thread. i also did the restore run but it also took about an hour to respond.

it took 5 minutes on start up sign. after a black screen for about 3-4 mins. then the background and pointer abut 5-6 mins. startbar about 5 mins. desktop about 5-6 mins. then it takes about half an hour to respond any click made.

the thing is it operates normally after that period. just the startup process tooks long.
i just didint format the disk yet. i dont like to format the system for every issue. if we can find a solution here that will be great.

i did searches with ad-aware, spybot, malware bytes, advanced system care and no problems at all.

Did you disable all startups in msconfig>Startup and >Services after Hiding all MS Services? Only your AV should remain.

Go over your install with Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which will also help optimize it and familarize you with the tools and methods which work the best.

You can also install Soluto to see a map of your startup pinpointing what takes so long to start. http://soluto.com/

    Thats what I didi yesterday.

I took the hdd and wipe it on my other pc. after wipe, I partition and format the drives. Then put it back to the orijinal pc with new sata cable to a new port. I performed a clean install after all. Now It takes about 10 minutes to start up. only firefox and microsoft security essentials installed. no startup program.
then I used wd 's diagnostic tool for a long test. it took 1 hour 37 mins to finish 320 gigs. No problem at all. I also check the SMART and again no problem.

I switched the ram slots. no change.

What hardware can cause a long start up procces? I have another pc i can exchange and test anything.

Let's check whether the probalem is in the OS or in the BIOS.

Type event viewer into start/search and go there. Then drill down this chain:

    Eventvwr
    Applications and Service Logs
    Microsoft
    Windows
    Diagnostics - performance
    Operational
    Event ID 100

What is the time in event 100 (see picture as example which is 36 seconds)

    So what did Soluto say?

Did you allow Windows Updates to provide your drivers and fully patch the system, or did you force a bunch of drivers like it XP?

Did you check Startup time before installing any Updates, programs or drivers?
