Weird question (?)...is there any way to increase the restart delay?

Hi all,

Here the scenario: when I restart my laptop (Start/shut down/restart) the laptop first shuts down then there is a gap (I never measured it but I will say between 8 and 10 seconds) before it restarts again!

Is there any way of increasing this gap (to 20 or 30 seconds)?

I know this sounds strange because everyone likes a quick shut down and a quick restart but I will prefer the opposite .

My laptop is running Win7 Pro 64 .

Short answer, No.

That is during the early stages of the boot process when you have very little influence over what is happening. The first opportunity to run anything during startup is much latter and then it will run in the background and not delay anything, at least not much.

This could be done relatively easily with Win9x by running something with the autoexec.bat file. But that won't work with the NT platform.

What possible reason would there be for wanting this?

I would like to have the laptop in the shut down state for more time before it restarts! Why? Sometimes when I restart it the screen will be black with the fans at full speed and it will stay like this forever...untill I press the on/off button for a while and force a shut down! For some reason this happens I would say each 20 restarts or so! Since this never happened when I power on the laptop only when I restart it (reboot) I think this could be a problem with something still be "charged" when the laptop restarts! A little more time in the shutdown state could be enough to avoid this....eventually!

Speaking as an electronics technician of many years that does not make much sense. During a restart everything remains "charged." As far as power is concerned nothing much changes. Adding more time at this stage would accomplish nothing.

After many questions/answers back and forth no solution was really offered.One of the possibilities suggested was a over heating problem so last week I stripped my laptop down to the motherboard and found it to be clean and dust free so that is one idea I can scratch off.

Be interesting to see any other ideas are thrown forward as my post died a quiet death here.

No, I have this problem from the beginning (I bought this laptop, a Toshiba Tecra R840-16J, almost 3 years ago!). From time to time, after a restart the laptop fan goes crazy and I have a black screen than only goes after a long press of the ON/OFF button!

I do not think it is a overheating! My laptop temp (process, internals and fan never goes more than 50% using the PCHealth Monitor from Toshiba). And it is very clean all over including all the cooling parts and vents!

There are lots of complains like this in the www!

You are right there are many reports on the web on this problem and of all those I have read there has been no solution found.Another possibility I read was the graphic driver may be the problem although I cant see how it would only affect the restart and not during the cold start,maybe a restart loads windows faster than a cold start as you pointed out in your above post.

I did update my graphic card driver sometime in July but as I do not do many restarts it is hard to pinpoint when the problem really started until I did a restart after the August updates so this could be the cause of the problem and something I will be looking into next and rolling back the driver to a previous version.

I just noticed in your specs you also have a AMD Radeon HD card,have you recently updated your drivers?

No, I did not updated any driver!

The solution seems to not restart it!!! Just shut down, wait and start!
