what is the different between x64 and x86?

I'm really confused which operating system 32-bit or 64-bit is for x86 and for x64????. I have searched on web and someone said x86 is for OS 32-bit and x64 is for OS 64-bit. Is that right??? This is really confusing. If anyone doesn't mind to tell me why it is called x86 and x64, I really appreciate it :):):). Thank you and appreciate in advance

This Wikipedia website might explain it for you. The x86 goes back a long way as you can see if you read through the info.

Hope it clears it up for you.
