Black screen , no cursor, PC Still on ?

Have windows 7 home premium updated with most recent patches etc. In the last week I haven't installed any software or made any system changes.

After 5 - 15 minutes of use, my screen is going black while the PC stays on. I changed the video card and it still happens so that is not the issue. It does not happen in safe mode. Something is triggering this black screen with no cursor or ability to reset , ctrl alt delete, etc. I have to hold down the power button on my box to restart the computer.

Does anyone have ideas on next steps I could take to try and solve this? Before doing a brand new win 7 install ? given it starts in safe mode, im trying to figure out what is causing this...

    Thanks very much,

    Joe

Windows updates causing problems with black screen

. Checked disks for errors and there is no problem there...

Nothing is working properly so far after 3 windows re-install....

Here is what has happened so far...

On a new install with no windows updates it doesn't get the black screen and doesn't crash.....

Towards the end of the 110 windows updates it crashes...

If I restart and continue updates it gets worse, to the point it won't restart at all

Something in the updates is causing the screen to go black with no cursor...

I have read there have been many problems with a black screen and Windows updates, problem is I can't find a specific solution.

I have a radeon 5450 chipset card and I'm trying to investigate if the drivers are conflicting with one of the windows updates...

If anyone has ideas please let me know.. Thanks!

Seems like windows updates are causing the black screen and crashes.... With no updates the system runs fine for hours...

I have read about several incidents people are having with Windows 7 updates and black screens but there is no easy fix for this. Does anyone have ideas?

All I can think of is trial and error until you find the update or updates causing the problem.

The way I would go about it is.

    1. Install
    2. Create System Restore point
    3. Install first 10 updates, reboot.
    4. If okay repeat steps 2 and 3 until it fails. When it does, boot the install DVD, take the Repair my computer path and restore the last System Restore Point created, then install the last 10 updates 1 or two at a time until you find the culprit, creating a System Restore Point before each.
    5. When you get the failure, boot the install DVD, take the Repair my computer path and restore the last System Restore Point created.
    6. Hide the update (right click on it and select Hide) then install the rest. Hopefully only one is causing the problem.

This is time consuming and painful to do but it's the only way I can think of to resolve this.
