Windows 7: Vertical white line right side of Hp dv6t 3200 laptop display

Hey all. I have a 5 yr. old HP Pavilion dv6t 3200 CTO Laptop. I have had a 1/4 " white vertical line on the right side on my display for awhile now. It is there all the time, even in safe mode, even when I run computer error scan.( Black Screen with white line still) The pointer will disappear under the white line when trying to scroll making this difficult. I have used HDMI cable to my TV and the display on it shows no white line. I then assume that it is either the screen or the display cable. I would have to open it up either way, but was wondering if there is a way to figure out which is the culprit ? Or just go for a new screen, just do not want to open it and replace screen to find out cable is bad. Any ideas ? Thanks

I believe the HP Pavilion dv6t 3200 has integrated graphics, meaning the graphics are soldered to the motherboard.
It is possible that it is the screen, but personally i think it could be the graphics chip. You mentioned that when you connect to an external display the "white line" is no longer visible.

You refer to the cable possibly being the problem are you referring to the HDMI cable or the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard?

If you are talking about the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard, the cable is soldered to the screen therefore if it is the cable a new screen will be needed. Can you take a picture of the line you are seeing please as this will help me diagnose the problem.

Yes I am sorry for the wording. When connected to an external moniter the line is no longer visable. I am not sure if the internle screen cable is seperate or not. I did see a cable advertised and believe them to be seperate parts ( The Screen & Cable ). Thanks for the reply.

My bets would be on the ribbon cable that hooks the laptop body to the display. Its usually in one of the hinges. I've had enough of the go bad over the years from the simple day-to-day opening/closing of it.

I was thinking it might just be the internal video cable also instead of the whole screen. But what to do ? I have to open it up, and am wondering if there was a way to figure out before doing so. Thanks

It is hard to diagnose a faulty ribbon inside a laptop without looking inside, you could try to push around the bottom of the screen to see if the line gets worse or better.

No problem with slow replies. I appreciate any reply at all. Like I said I have been using the laptop like this for a month with no change in it's behavior. I can see the cable in the hinge area and have prodded it with no visable changes..

If the fault is not present on an external monitor the graphics "card" in the laptop is fine. To me that looks like either a problem with the LVDS cable or the connector or the itself screen is faulty.

Yeah, seems to be straight-forward since the external monitor works *fine*. :)

Edit: However, ofc., there's the remote-possibility that something other than the laptop monitor is borked! Heh. :-f
