Every now and then I need to open Task Manager. And every now and then I 'discover' stuff I do not 'remember' seeing before. Today I see something called octoshape client. A brief visit with google tells me it has something to do with streaming video efficiency. I am unable to discover how it got on my system in the first place. Is it standard Win 7 stuff and I simply never noticed? I welcome all input.

Octoshape is a Peer to peer Streaming plug-in aimed to use your bandwidth to make it easier for the content provider to stream content to users, I would suggest you remove it as soon as possible. There should be an entry in the add/remove programs.
This plug-in is normally installed due to a pop up on various news sites and although not technically malware, anything that takes a users bandwidth is not wanted.
Thx Barman58 - We recently signed up to DirecTV satellite service and I installed their app to watch TV on my computer. Do you think it is a piece of this app? I do not recall seeing this at the time.
It's possible, I would check all the documentation you have, for reference to stream sharing. If you cannot find anything it may be worthwhile contacting them directly :)
Look in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) for that program then right-click its Folder icon, look at the date it was created, might give a clue as to the When and checking other Folders for the same date may indicate what it came with.
Sorry to jump into this thread but one possible suggestion is to run LastActivityView and sort by "software installation" to see if it shows up in the list.
